Welcome to the Columbia University Orthopaedic Residency Website.

As Chairman, I am pleased to welcome you to our website. Columbia University and New York Presbyterian Hospital have a rich tradition in orthopaedic surgery dating back to 1866 when the New York Orthopaedic Dispensary opened its doors. Since that time, we have grown into a preeminent institution for quality patient care, research, and education. Many of the leaders in orthopaedic surgery throughout the United States and abroad have trained here at Columbia.

Our residency program continues to train leaders and we are proud to have comprehensive facilities and a dedicated cadre of research and teaching faculty. Our residents spend the majority of their time at the Columbia Presbyterian Campus of New York Presbyterian Hospital in northern Manhattan and also rotate at the Florida Orthopaedic Institute, in Tampa, Florida. Our only away rotation in Tampa gives our residents rich experience in level 1 trauma surgery; an excellent complement to our regular level 2 experience at home.

Our residents all participate in a wide variety of research projects. Every year, residents are given the opportunity to present these projects at national meetings. Our clinical research is often done in close collaborations with the Columbia University School of Public Health and with other Clinical Departments. Some residents undertake basic science research through the Columbia Center for Orthopaedic Research (COR).

I encourage you to ask questions and discuss the program with our current residents. Finally, I hope this website allows you to gain some valuable information concerning our program and we look forward to meeting you in the future. We encourage 4th year students to spend a month on our service - if you are interested, please contact Courtney Walsh in the Dean's Office at 212-305-1642.

Sincerely,

Louis U. Bigliani, MD
