HP LaserJet Firmware Update to Prevent Unautorized Access
Affects systems: other,

Please update any HP LaserJet printers as soon as possible to prevent an unauthorized attack. HP has posted a news release and has a firmware update available on their website to patch the issue. Any networked printers should also follow best practices for securing devices by placing printers behind a firewall and, where possible, disabling remote firmware upload on exposed printers.

  1. To upgrade your printerís firmware. Visit the site linked below to download the firmware for your printer. Select your printer model from the list: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Product.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&taskId=135&prodTypeId=18972&prodCatId=236252
  2. On the download page for your printer model, DO NOT SELECT AN OPERATING SYSTEM. Instead, lick for the Cross operating system (BIOS, Firmware, Diagnostics, etc.) at the bottom of the operating system list.
  3. Disable remote firmware upload for network attached printers. Follow the steps on this link. Directions vary depending on printer model.
  4. Add IP access control lists (ACLs) to your printer to limit what networks can print to the printer (not available on all HP printer models). Follow the link for an example of how to apply ACLs on an HP printer.
