| DESCRIPTION: |
September 19, 2002 is a special day as we celebrate the notable
life and works from medicine to music of Dr. Virginia Apgar. The year
2002 is the 50th anniversary of her presentation of the scoring system
that bears her name and that revolutionized care of the newborn. This
simple observational assessment ultimately led to the creation of
sub-specialties such as Neonatology and Perinatology, as well as the
development of neonatal intensive care units.
The first event of the day will be the annual Allen Hyman History of Anesthesia and
Medicine Lecture. This year, Dr. Hyman will deliver the lecture entitled “The History of
Neonatal Resuscitation.” Breakfast will be served in the lobby of the
auditorium prior to the lecture.
The afternoon will include a series of short talks that focus on
scientific and ethical topics (see schedule below). Dr. Mary Ellen Avery, President of AAAS,
and Dr. Selma Calmes, Chair of Anesthesiology at Olive View UCLA Medical Center and noted medical
historian, will deliver the keynote and the capstone addresses respectively.
A wine and cheese reception at Bard Hall (60 Haven Ave.) followed by a
concert featuring the Apgar String Quartet will conclude the day.
If you have questions regarding the Hyman lecture, please contact Ms.
Marguerite Outlaw, Department of Anesthesiology, at 305-8349,
mo2013@columbia.edu. For questions related to the rest of the
Symposium, including the luncheon, the scientific presentations, and the Apgar
concert, please contact Dr. Ruth Fischbach at (212) 305-8387 or
rf416@columbia.edu.
